I've been working my way through the series since I finished this first book, tagging along with Hiro and Mateo as they seek justice and try to stay alive in feudal Japan. Courtesy and good manners are only a start as to guaranteeing safety among the touchy samurai. Mateo the Jesuit priest often speaks in-the-moment and is learning not to wear his heart on his sleeve. He's a good foil for the calculating-but-sympathetic Hiro, who serves as his translator, bodyguard, and fixer, has a particular set of secret skills, which give him unique insights into the crime scenes. Their Kyoto is both exotic and familiar with its various neighborhoods stocked with neighborhood characters, including a bad-tempered samurai cop, the local drunk, a female samurai, and the ladies of the upscale teahouse where the murder occurred. As I said earlier, this book prompted me to get the second book. I'm hooked. You will be, too..

Having won the second installment of this series from Goodreads, read and reviewed it, I decided to buy the first book in the series. I have not been disappointed. In this episode, a rich, older samurai has been killed in the room of one of the entertainers, a recent convert to Catholicism. Father Mateo is determined to find the murderer, not believing as the dead man's son and policeman does, that the young girl has committed the crime. He convinces the policeman to give him two days in which to prove her innocence, much to the dismay of his appointed protector, Hiro ( love the name of the Japanese hero!). Thus begins a convoluted who dunnit, which took me one day to read.

In addition to the fun of following the clues or lack of them along with Mateo, Hiro is the enjoyment of the character of their no nonsense housekeeper, Ana and their less than impeccable housemate, Luis, a Portuguese trader. Ms Spann reveals much of Japanese culture and behavior through the hapless etiquette errors made by the Portuguese priest and the frustration of his Japanese scribe, Hiro, with these errors. In addition, through description and dialogue she reveals even more of differences between her European characters and the natives with whom they come in contact through the course of the investigation. This juxtaposition of East and West make what could be a simple cozy mystery far more interesting.

I look forward to the third installment of the adventures of Hiro, Mateo, et al or as Ms Spann calls them, the Shinobi ( Hiro is actually an undercover member of this society of assassins ) Mysteries.

More mysteries are being set in historical Japan. This one, set during the 1700s when Portuguese traders were just beginning inroads into the Empire, concerns a Portuguese priest and the samurai sworn to protect him. Two very good characters true to their culture. A retired samurai is killed in a teahouse (the author is careful to make sure the reader knows this is a house of entertainment and not a brothel) . A young woman is accused. She happens to be a Christian. Which brings the priest and his protector into the mix. But the outraged son of the dead man will only give them two days to find a better solution otherwise he'll kill the girl--and the priest who protects her. Twists and turns and a satisfying solution. Looking forward to more from this author.
Author Susan Spann takes us to imperial Japan in 1565. The Jesuits, in the form of Portuguese priest Father Mateo, have a toehold in Kyoto, from which he has the approval of the regional shogun, or warlord, to conduct missionary work. A shinobi, a covert agent trained in stealth—read ninja—has been assigned to protect him.
Hiro Hattori, from the distant city of Iga, is the shinobi. Hiro’s point of view, and whispered backstory, guides us through this exciting journey. The cracks in feudal Japan are beginning to show, yet society is still delicately balanced with rules and norms.
A teahouse "entertainer" girl, Sayuri, who has converted to Christianity, is found with a dead client. Father Mateo comes to see what he can do for this member of his nascent flock. Although Sayuri was found with blood on her kimono, she insists she woke to find the client’s throat slashed and the room bloody. The dead man’s enraged son, a local policeman, is entitled by law to execute his father’s killer. He gives Father Mateo two days to prove the girl is not the killer and find the real one; if the priest cannot the son will kill both the girl and the priest.
Brilliant writing, with details so authentic you can smell the cherry blossoms.

based on their respective cultures.This was a critical Period in Japan when the country was open to western influences (which were clashing
with their traditional culture which had many similarities to the European middle ages in attitude toward different classes and in forms of local
government This open period (1560's) ended about 40 years later when Japan purged itself of western influences and became isolationist for
about 250 years. It then became a mixture with modern Technology and strong government but with a strong influence of the "medieval" culture
which lasted through World War II
