Love and other Unknown Variables took me on an emotional ride that I wasn’t mentally prepared for. To be entirely honest I got the book because it involved a nerd trying to find love and that was all I needed to really want the book, and I’ll admit to skipping over the part in the blurb about Charlotte’s illness. But I’m glad I did, because if I would have known it was going to rip my heart out when I started it then I would have never actually started it. I usually avoid things that will require tissues- and trust me this read will definitely require some tissues. The book starts us off with a nerdy high school student who is treating love like a science experiment. He actually has studies he’s performed on other girls and the outcome of those encounters. But he knows nothing else but science and math so that’s how he handles everything throughout the entire novel- until Charlotte. Charlotte changes his reality and makes him question everything, which is ultimately what love is sort of like.
The love story between Charlotte and Charlie is quirky and fun, and is almost missed in the beginning because they are both to afraid. Charlie is too afraid to fall in love, Charlotte is too afraid to hurt her best friend who is Charlie’s sister. Then Charlie finds out about Charlotte’s illness and it frightens him even more, but eventually draws him to her and they confess their feelings and their romance blossoms. And it’s a cute romance, even if it’s short-lived. It’s that romance that everyone wants, and so few have the joy of feeling. It’s that live in the moment love because all you have is now kind of love. And to watch them fall further in love with each other reminds me so much of how my husband and I feel in love with each other. It was awkward at first, but it turned into something beautiful that only the two of us will understand and feel.
But then the story gets dark and Shannon Lee Alexander rips out the hearts of her reader as the inevitable happens. We all know it’s coming as we read, but we pray that a miracle happens and it doesn’t. Sadly that miracle doesn’t happen and we’re left just as torn as the actual characters. We’re left trying to pick up ourselves from the roller coaster of emotions we just went through as we feel in love with characters to see them ripped away. Watching a fictional person you’ve grown to love suffer sucks, there’s no other way to describe it. But the pain makes you feel human and realize that life is precious and that we aren’t always granted a tomorrow.
I highly recommend having a box of tissues handy as you read this book, you just may need them.

Wow too many things to say and will not be as articulate as the author. I waited for this book to be on sale...loss, went on sale...win, could have experienced it sooner...loss, now that I have...win - forever, infinity. (Read book it will make sense).
This is like a pre-story for one of the Big Bang Theory characters, Leonard or a cousin of his. I love the wit, humor, nerd/geek-dome, hope and sadness this story brought. The time this author spent to bring different worlds a reality was amazing along with the parallels. Just amazing.
Sorry, my vision is blurry from tears, both happy and sad. This book was about Charlie's journey. He saw his life as a straight line, but then these women infiltrated his world and made him see there was more to him, and his life, than the numbers and formulas. All of them Becca, Charlotte, Mrs. Dumwity, Ms. Finch, Greta -- they all added a dimension to Charlie's single-plane life. The first half of the book is quite fun. The characters are very amusing and I probably was especially amused, because I, myself, am a math/science geek. With that said, the second half of the book is a lot tougher -- stuff gets real in the second half of the way, but the whole time we are treated to Alexander's beautiful writing. AND as if I had not been through enough, the author writes us, the reader, a personal letter, which just pushed me over the edge. Happy-sad tears, I cried, happy-sad tears, but I was glad I got to take this journey with Other Charlie.
It is a rare occasion that a book makes me laugh and cry at the same time. I really loved Charlotte's quick wit and charming sarcasm, combined with Charlie's social ineptitude it made for a winning combination.
The story is written from Charlie's point of view which gives it a really great perspective. As intelligent as he is, Charlie has a lot to learn about life, social skills and of course love. One of my favorite quotes from the book is “Please don't confuse love and logic Charlie. They aren't even remotely related. “ I really enjoyed reading about Charlie's fumbling journey into realizing not everything in life can be broken down into an equation.
In addition to enjoying the budding friendship of Charlotte and Charlie, their friends and family really make this a well rounded story. Charlie's two best friends and sister are easy to relate to and aren't afraid to tell him when he's being awful. This story would not have been as strong without them.
Charlotte's sister is the idealist we all want to be. She challenges a group of high school kids to "bring it" on the very first day of class and the pranks that ensue brought a delightful chuckle in this sometimes serious story. Most of all I enjoyed that she wasn't perfect and was able to be vulnerable without being weak. That seems to be a rare talent for female characters.
I would highly recommend you pick up this well written story, but be prepared for a few tears along the way. As with life, we can't always chose our own endings.
