Emotions while reading this book are strong, complex, and incredibly difficult to sort out. There is horror, and sometimes humor at the same time. Even having heard some of these kind of facts before, they are so much more laid bare and in your face here. But one thing this isn’t is simple. Hard to process completely, impossible to look away. An amazing and humbling book.Tags : Water & Power [Steven Dunn] on Amazon.com. *FREE* shipping on qualifying offers. Steven Dunn is an exceptionally gifted writer. In Water & Power, he presents a military experience that is driven by hard truths and serious observation, both inward looking and outward. Dunn is the rare type of writer who is both parts cerebral and emotional. His work will open your heart and mind. This isn't a traditional novel, and the hybrid form pushes the reader to make greater connections.
On the heels of the success of "Potted Meat", Steven Dunn has just released his new book, Water and Power! This book is a literary mosaic, collaging the two contradictory faces of the military the official face of the recruiting posters and the real faces of the people, including Steven's. Wonderful!
An incisive document that doesn’t bat eyes at the realities of wartime and military service, water & power is an explosive read gathered from many perspectives and subject to a kind of literary osmosis. In his nonfiction novel, Steven Dunn has cast an unflinching hand onto the jeopardy war profiteering has wrought on the world, including interviews, observations, lists, collages, comics, and illustrations, moving the focus from the solo experience of service and damage, to the collective ontological state of war against populations, people. The systemic failures of the machine, Dunn says, affect us long after the reports stop appearing onscreen. Most of the writing appears unconfined to narrative, linear, but rather sharply curated, making the sensory overload of the conjoined pieces all that more staggering. Having had a father who served in the Navy, who talks nothing but outward affection for his country, using the propaganda handed to him by his superiors, it was shocking to think about the repercussions of service and complicity from living behind the facade of defense. Who is the military really protecting? Dunn seems to ask, but we find the answer is incomplete, hidden from public eyes by an uncaring few. Dunn brings compassion for those changed by the focus of war, by moving the conversation to the whole, rather than a part, of humanity.
