English Dialects From the Eighth Century to the Present Day edition by Walter WWalter William Skeat Literature Fiction eBooks
I think this quote from Chapter 1 sums up my feeling about this book: "There is, in fact, no limit to the good use to which a reverent study of our dialects may be put by a diligent student. They abound with pearls which are worthy of a better fate than to be trampled under foot." I am entranced by the gems I found in the first chapter alone. And it is intriguing to learn that, rather than 'Anglo-Saxon,' "it is desirable to give the more general name of 'Old English' to the oldest forms of our language, because this term can be employed collectively, so as to include Northumbrian, Mercian, 'Anglo-Saxon' and Kentish under one designation. The name 'Anglo-Saxon' was certainly rather inappropriate, as the speakers of it were mostly Saxons and not Angles at all; which leads up to the paradox that they did not speak 'English'; for that, in the extreme literal sense, was the language of the Angles only!" Mr. Skeat's language and style are very easy on the ears to a 21st century reader, and are not encumbered with technical or insiders' jargon. Altogether a very readable and enjoyable book!Product details

English Dialects From the Eighth Century to the Present Day edition by Walter WWalter William Skeat Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
This book is for language lovers, especially those who like to trace language roots. It is clearly written and well-organized. Since it was written around 1910 in England, the language is sometimes a little bit dated, but the content is fabulous. A book for philologists and professional and amateur linguists.
Great for those of us who love language and history. Not for the lazy reader. Good bedtime reading. Read and learn.
